Why does my device have connected "now" but have no updates?

Symptoms
If you are experiencing issues on Telematics Guru, where your device says it has connected recently or even “now” but has no updates in its analog data or any other info, it may be a result of the device sending an invalid GPS position to Telematics Guru.
If a device has not yet powered on (yet to be provisioned) - or Power on Resets, it will not have/lose it's ‘last known’ GPS fix.
A common scenario is with hard-wired devices, such as:
- Asset is driven into a parking garage, where GPS signal is not available
- It is then isolated - so the device loses power
- The device eventually runs flat.
- Once it is powered back on, it cannot get a new fix.
If it is unable to obtain a new fix after this power on reset - on it's next update, it will report the following data to Telematics Guru:
- GPS Position (Lat/Long) : 0, 0
- GPS DateTime: 00:00 1 Jan 2013 - (01/01/13)
This is the Digital Matter epoch timestamp.
If data comes in with this datetime - it cannot be plotted on the map or correctly added to device telemetry.
If the device has never connected to Telematics Guru before, it will be clearly indicated that the device has not obtained a fix within the Manage Assets Grid
However, if the device has previously connected - old data does exist.
Telematics Guru will display the last connection as ‘Now’ (as the device has connected), but:
- Within Assets → Telemetry - no new records will appear
- The values shown on the Live View will be out of date/incorrect.
Identifying an Old Fix/Reset
The Installer Page provides a quick and useful indication of an old fix.
If the Last Communication and GPS Update times differ significantly - we know the device has had trouble getting a fix.
The installer page is found at https://devicemanager.digitalmatter.com/installer - simply type in the relevant serial.
We can check the Device Logs to see if the device has power on reset, which typically looks like the below:
Debug[GEN][Crit]: VBat = 4888 mV, Reset = 0X1
(The code 0x1 indicates that it is a power on reset) - further information see Commonly Seen Device Logs
Resolution
The key issue here is that the device cannot get a fix. In general once the device moves location to an area with better signal, normal operation will resume.
