KPN Plastic SIM Compatibility with Digital Matter Devices
This article summarises current compatibility findings for KPN plastic SIMs across Digital Matter devices, including where an APN must be set manually, where firmware or provisioning work is required. Use this page when planning a rollout with KPN plastic SIMs or when troubleshooting first-time registration issues.
Important: This page is for plastic SIM devices
This article applies to devices with a removable SIM card.
For the integrated eSIM version of Barra Fusion, refer to Barra Fusion Cat 1bis EUK - Supported Countries and Network Settings.
KPN remains a strong roaming option in general, but plastic SIM behaviour still varies by device family, firmware, APN configuration, and network type. For Global devices in particular, bench testing is still recommended before deployment at scale.
Compatibility Table
The table below reflects the current compatibility status for KPN plastic SIMs, in device alphabetical order. Where the recommend action stipulates setting the APN with the DM-Link, use the digitalmatter APN.
| Device | Status | Notes | Recommended Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arrow-Global-BLE | Known ‘issue’. | Roaming SIM registration issue. This will be resolved in future device bootloader FW versions. | Devices already manufactured require DM-Link to update firmware to the latest version. |
| Barra-Core-NB | Not supported on NB-IoT. | Current result for this KPN use case is not supported. | Use an alternative supported SIM or device and network combination. |
| Barra-Edge | Connection immediate. | No special action observed during testing. | Standard provisioning. |
| Barra-GPS | Connection immediate. | No special action observed during testing. | Standard provisioning. |
| Barra-Recovery | Connection immediate. | No special action observed during testing. | Standard provisioning. |
| Bolt2-4G | Connection immediate. | No special action observed during testing. | Standard provisioning. |
| Dart3-Global-BLE | APN required. | Global device, requires setting the APN. | Use the DM-Link to set the APN before deployment and allow additional time for first registration. |
| Dart3-4G-BLE | Connection immediate. | No special action observed during testing. | Standard provisioning. |
| G150-Global | APN required. | Global device, requires setting the APN. | Use the DM-Link to set the APN before deployment and allow additional time for first registration. |
| Griffin-Air | APN required. | Global device, requires setting the APN. | Use the DM-Link to set the APN before deployment and allow additional time for first registration. |
| Hawk (Lite, PCB, NTN) | Connection immediate. | No special action observed during testing. | Standard provisioning. |
| Manta-C-Radar | Connection immediate. | No special action observed during testing. | Standard provisioning. |
| Manta-Fusion | Connection immediate. | No special action observed during testing. | Standard provisioning. |
| Manta-GPS-CATMNB | Connection immediate. | No special action observed during testing. | Standard provisioning. |
| Oyster3-4G | Connection immediate. | No special action observed during testing. | Standard provisioning. |
| Oyster3-4g-BLE | Connection immediate. | No special action observed during testing. | Standard provisioning. |
| Oyster-Edge | Connection immediate. | No special action observed during testing. | Standard provisioning. |
| Oyster-Global | APN required. | Global device, requires setting the APN. | Use the DM-Link to set the APN before deployment and allow additional time for first registration. |
| Remora3-Global | APN required. | Global device, requires setting the APN. | Use the DM-Link to set the APN before deployment and allow additional time for first registration. |
| Yabby-Edge | Connection immediate. | No special action observed during testing. | Standard provisioning. |
| Yabby3-4G | Connection immediate. | No special action observed during testing. | Standard provisioning. |
A device marked as connection immediate should still be validated in the actual deployment region before commercial rollout.
What This Means for Deployments
Global devices may need additional setup
Several Global devices in this list required manual APN configuration before they would connect correctly with a KPN plastic SIM. Where that requirement is known, apply the APN during provisioning rather than waiting for field troubleshooting.
Arrow Global BLE needs special attention
Arrow Global BLE has a known bootloader limitation in this use case. Use the DM-Link to update the device firmware before deployment where KPN plastic SIMs are planned.
Test in the real deployment environment
Even where a device connected immediately during bench testing, roaming behaviour can still vary by country, operator, and site conditions. A bench test is useful, but it is not a substitute for deployment-region validation.
General KPN Notes
KPN remains a recommended roaming option for many deployments because it offers a good balance between operational support, roaming performance and the best battery life. Roaming SIMs can still increase registration time and battery consumption compared with a local SIM, so deployment planning should account for that.
For Global devices, follow the standard Global network settings guidance unless you have already confirmed a better local configuration for the target region.
