The Remora3 makes use of the Sony CXD5612 GNSS module to provide a location from GPS, GLONASS, Galileo and Beidou satellite constellations.

Sony periodically release firmware updates to the module to improve performance.

Through testing, Digital Matter have obvserved significant improvements when upgrading from version 0.90 to 0.122.

Some early Remora3 devices (serials below 681000) were shipped on v0.90. We recommend updating these devices to the latest firmware via the process below.

Update Procedure

Set Device Firmware to 1.8 or above

The device main firmware needs to be set to version 1.8 or later to enable GNSS module updates.

See the OEM Server Getting Started Guide for how to update firmware. In short, select your device(s) and Device Operations → Set Firmware

Enable GPS Update in Admin parameters

Once applied, Edit the device Admin parameters

Add the “GPS Updates” parameter tab, and set Enable GPS Updates = Yes

Caution

  1. The update will use approximately 1MB of data. Be wary of any additional data charges
  2. When editing admin parameters - be careful not to edit/overwrite any which are currently applied (i.e. APN or network settings)

Once you have trialled on a selection of devices, an Admin Parameter template can be created to allow for bulk update.

Performance Improvements

The latest Sony firmware improves on the accuracy of cold-start fixes (i.e. fixes on a heartbeat) - and reduces the chance of ‘outlier' positions - which can generate false geofence exit alerts or other undesired behaviour.

Additionally, an ‘accuracy’ parameter has been added.

The difference between Normal, Accuracy and High Accuracy the device increasingly prioritises position accuracy over TTFF (Time to First Fix). In short, this means the device in High Accuracy mode will use a bit more energy to get a fix than in Normal - but the fixes are more likely to be accurate.

Use High Accuracy if you experience any issue with the ultimate accuracy of fixes.

Normal Accuracy Setting

In the image below, some ‘outlier’ positions can be seen.

High Accuracy Setting

The positions are much more densely clustered.
